The generation of wastewater is an inescapable reality. To avoid any pollution, this wastewater must be treated so as to conform to environmental standards, generating large volumes of sludge that must be disposed of through land application (use in agriculture), incineration or landfilling. The growth of the world’s population, economic development and more stringent sludge discharge regulations are however creating enormous pressure on municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
Until now, the technologies available for treating sludge have not allowed for a high dewatering rate or efficient sanitization of the sludge. At the same time, soaring energy costs, rapid sludge volume growth and disposal routes rarefaction, result in an uncontrolled increase in operating expenses, leaving WWTP owner and operators to urgently seek innovative solutions to reduce cost and liabilities associated with sludge disposal.
